The Bavarian Mountain Hound is a medium, athletic scenthound with a slightly wrinkled forehead, dropped ears, and a short, dense red or fawn coat. The body is a little longer than tall, built for trailing wounded game in steep woods.

A specialist tracking hound for a handler who works the woods; short coat, a trail voice, and a poor match for a quiet city apartment.

The Bavarian Mountain Hound, or Bayerischer Gebirgsschweisshund, is a German tracking hound developed to follow the blood trail of wounded deer and boar in mountain country. It is still used mainly by licensed hunters. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Color: Deep red, deer red, or fawn; a black mask or overlay is common
Coat: Short, dense, and close-lying, slightly longer on the tail

Temperament

These hounds are typically calm at home and intense on a track. They bond closely to their handler and can be reserved with strangers. They are not a casual jogging companion; they need purposeful work.

Training

Train the tracking work early and keep the recall reliable. Once a blood trail is found, many of these dogs will ignore everything else.

Care and grooming

The short coat needs a weekly brush. Check pads and ears after work in rough cover.

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections and joint strain from mountain work are the issues most often watched.
