The Bergamasco is a medium-to-large herding dog covered in characteristic mats (flocks) that form from a mix of hair and wool. The head is large, the ears are dropped, and the outline is rustic.

A flock guardian whose felted flocks replace ordinary brushing; a rural or large-yard dog with a low indoor voice and no business in a small flat.

The Bergamasco is an Italian alpine herding dog from the Bergamo region. The flocks protected the dog from weather and from nips.

Temperament

Bergamascos are typically calm, watchful, and tied to their handler. They think for themselves and do not enjoy harsh drill. They need a job.

Training

Be patient and consistent. They learn farm work readily.

Care and grooming

The flocks are separated by hand as they form and then left. Do not brush them out. Keep the coat dry after bathing.

Shedding

Low once the flocks are formed.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia can occur; keep the dog lean.
