The Catalonian Sheepdog is a medium herding dog with a shaggy, slightly wavy coat, a bearded face, and a rustic outline. The ears are dropped or folded, and the tail may be long or a natural bob.

A medium Spanish herder with a longish coat that needs brushing, a watchful bark, and a mind built for livestock rather than idle apartment hours.

The Catalonian Sheepdog, or Gos d’Atura Catala, is a herding breed from Catalonia in northeastern Spain. It was used to move sheep in the Pyrenees and on the plains. The UKC classes it as a Herding Dog.

Temperament

These shepherds are typically loyal, watchful, and tied to their handler. They can be reserved with strangers and may try to herd children or other pets. They need a job, not just a backyard.

Training

They learn quickly and remember inconsistent rules. Start herding or obedience work early and socialize them well.

Care and grooming

Brush the long coat several times a week so it does not mat behind the ears and on the hindquarters.

Shedding

Moderate; heavier when the undercoat blows.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia and eye issues can appear; ask breeders about health testing.
