The Hanover Hound is a heavy, rectangular tracking hound with a wrinkled forehead, dropped ears, and a short red or brindle coat. The body is powerful, built to follow a cold blood trail rather than to race a pack.

A heavy German tracking hound for a handler who works wounded game; short coat, a low trail voice, and country hours rather than city stillness.

The Hanover Hound, or Hannover’scher Schweisshund, is a German blood-tracking hound used to follow wounded game. It works on a lead with a licensed tracker. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Temperament

These hounds are typically calm at home and intense on a track. They bond closely to their handler and can be reserved with strangers. They are not a casual jogging companion.

Training

Train the tracking work early and keep the recall reliable. Once a blood trail is found, many of these dogs will ignore everything else.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat weekly. Check pads after work in rough cover.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections and joint strain from mountain or forest work are the issues most often watched.
