The Irish Red and White Setter is a large, slightly rectangular gundog with a flat red-and-white coat, dropped ears, and a feathered tail. The outline is that of a working setter, more substantial than a slight field-trial waif.

A bird dog for an active house; a feathered coat that needs brushing, a generally soft voice, and daily field or running time.

The Irish Red and White Setter is the older of the two Irish setter colors and was rebuilt as a working bird dog in the 20th century. It is a separate breed from the solid-red Irish Setter.

Color: Pearly white with rich red patches; some ticking is allowed
Coat: Flat, straight, and medium length, with feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail

Temperament

These setters are typically friendly, people-oriented, and high-energy. They need field work or long runs. A bored setter becomes noisy or destructive.

Training

Be patient and consistent. Start bird work early.

Care and grooming

Brush the feathering several times a week. Keep the ears clean.

Moderate.

Health

Irish Red and White Setters may develop canine leucocyte adhesion deficiency (CLAD), hip dysplasia, and eye disease. Ask breeders about DNA and hip testing.
