The Italian Hound is a lean, rectangular scenthound that comes in a smooth coat and a wire coat. The ears are long and dropped, the tail is saber-like, and the color is usually fawn or black-and-tan.

An Italian pack hound with a short coat and a musical hunt voice; country miles, not a closed-in city routine.

The Italian Hound, or Segugio Italiano, is Italy’s native scenthound, used on hare and wild boar. Smooth and wire varieties are the same breed in most registries. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Color: Fawn in any shade, or black and tan
Coat: Smooth and close, or wire-haired and rough

Temperament

These hounds are typically gentle at home and determined on a track. They have a carrying voice and will follow a scent out of an unfenced yard. They need more running than a short walk.

Training

Train the recall early and use a long line.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat, or brush the wire coat weekly. Clean the long ears after work.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections are the issue most often seen after field work.
