The Kooikerhondje is a small-to-medium, orange-and-white spaniel-type dog with a silky coat, dropped ears often tipped with black (earrings), and a well-feathered tail. The outline is slightly rectangular and the movement is springy.

A small Dutch duck-decoy spaniel who can share a house or apartment if walked; a coat that needs modest brushing and a brighter voice when excited.

The Kooikerhondje is a Dutch duck-decoy dog, used to lure waterfowl into traps along the canals. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

Kooikers are typically lively, sensitive, and tied to their household. They can be reserved with strangers. They need more activity than a quiet lap-dog life.

Training

They learn quickly and do not take well to harsh methods. Keep sessions short and upbeat.

Care and grooming

Brush the coat weekly so the feathering does not mat. Check the ears.

Shedding

Moderate.

Health

Kooikerhondjes may develop hereditary necrotizing myelopathy and von Willebrand disease in some lines. Ask breeders about DNA tests.
