The New Guinea Singing Dog is a small-to-medium, dingo-like wild dog with erect ears, a bushy tail, and a short coat. The body is lean and the gait is extremely flexible. The famous trait is a rising, harmonic howl.

A primitive highland dog with a short coat and a true howl; reserved with strangers and a poor match for a busy first-time apartment.

The New Guinea Singing Dog is a wild or semi-wild canid from the New Guinea highlands, related to the dingo. It is not a typical kennel breed. Most dogs in homes come from a small captive population. The UKC classes it as a Sighthound & Pariah.

Temperament

Singers are typically independent, climbing, and highly vocal. They are not reliable off lead and do not think like a Golden Retriever. They are a specialist animal, not a casual family pet.

Training

Use patience and management more than drill. A secure, covered yard is safer than a hope that the recall will hold.

Care and grooming

The short coat needs little more than a weekly wipe. They need climbing opportunities and mental work.

Health

The captive population is small, so genetic diversity is limited. Work with people who know the captive lines rather than with a backyard novelty breeder.
