The Pharaoh Hound is a lean, racy warren hound with a short tan coat, large erect ears, and an amber eye. The skin on the nose and face can flush darker when the dog is excited. The outline is that of a primitive rabbit hunter.

A lean hunting hound who is quiet and clean indoors and can live in an apartment if given safe runs; short coat and a soft house voice.

The Pharaoh Hound, or Kelb tal-Fenek, is the rabbit dog of Malta. Despite the name, it is a Maltese hunting breed, not an Egyptian temple dog. The AKC places it in the Hound Group; the UKC classes it as a Sighthound & Pariah.

Temperament

These hounds are typically gentle with their household, reserved with strangers, and explosive when a rabbit moves. They need more running room than a typical house pet. They feel the cold.

Training

Be patient and use a long line. A rabbit in motion will beat a weak recall.

Care and grooming

The short coat needs a weekly wipe. Provide a coat in cold weather.

Health

Pharaoh Hounds are generally hardy. As with other lean sighthounds, use care with anesthesia and keep them from becoming overweight.
