The Thai Ridgeback is a medium-to-large, athletic primitive dog with a short coat and a ridge of hair growing the wrong way along the back. The ears are large and erect, and the outline is lean and square.

A short-coated, independent hunting dog for experienced handling and a yard; little grooming, a reserved voice, and a poor match for a chaotic first apartment.

The Thai Ridgeback is a primitive hunting and guardian dog from eastern Thailand. The ridge is a breed trait, as in the Rhodesian Ridgeback. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Sighthound & Pariah.

Temperament

These dogs are typically independent, loyal to their household, and reserved with strangers. They have a strong prey drive and need more work than a short walk. They are not a soft first-time companion breed.

Training

Be consistent and start socialization early. They think for themselves.

Care and grooming

The short coat needs only a weekly wipe. A secure fence matters more than fancy trimming.

Health

Dermoid sinus can occur along the ridge, as in other ridged breeds. Ask breeders about this and keep the dog lean.
