The Wirehaired Vizsla is a medium pointing dog with a harsh rust-gold coat, a bearded muzzle, and dropped ears. It is slightly heavier than the smooth Vizsla and built for colder cover.

A rust-colored wiry gundog for an active house; modest coat work, a generally soft voice, and daily field or running time.

The Wirehaired Vizsla is a Hungarian gundog created by crossing Vizslas with German Wirehaired Pointers to produce a harder coat for rough weather.

Color: Golden rust; the wiry coat may look a shade darker than a smooth Vizsla
Coat: Harsh, close, and dense, with a beard and eyebrows

Temperament

These pointers are typically affectionate, people-oriented, and high-energy. They need field work or long runs. They do poorly when left alone all day.

Training

They learn quickly and are sensitive to harsh methods. Start bird work early.

Care and grooming

Brush the harsh coat weekly. Dry the beard and ears after water work.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

Wirehaired Vizslas may develop hip dysplasia and the same cancers seen in some Vizsla lines. Ask breeders about health testing.
